Choose a routine you can follow consistently. If boiling already fits your day, there is no need to buy a sterilizer just in case. If you want to change the routine, compare your available time, kitchen space and bottle compatibility after establishing the care routine appropriate for your baby.
Start with infant-care guidance
The US CDC says to clean feeding items before sanitizing. It recommends sanitizing daily or more often, particularly for babies under 2 months, babies born prematurely, and those with weakened immunity. For older, healthy babies, it says daily sanitizing may not be necessary if items are cleaned carefully after every use.
Boiling times differ: CDC specifies 5 minutes, while the UK NHS specifies at least 10 minutes, with all equipment submerged. Parents in Egypt should follow their paediatrician or local health guidance for the routine that fits their baby; this comparison does not choose between those times.
For drying, CDC says to allow items to air-dry thoroughly and not rub or pat them dry with a dish towel, because a towel may transfer germs to the items.
Device instructions are a separate matter
For steam, follow the sterilizer’s own manual for loading, cycle, cooling and drying, as directed by CDC’s steam-system guidance. That manual governs device operation; it does not resolve the authorities’ boiling-time difference. Also check the bottle and teat instructions for permitted sanitizing methods.
When to keep boiling, and when to consider a machine
Keep your boiling routine if it fits the guidance you follow, you are comfortable carrying it out, and you would rather defer buying another appliance.
Consider a microwave sterilizer first if you already have a microwave you can make available. Check that the sterilizer fits inside and that your bottles and parts fit its loading instructions.
Compare a standalone electric unit if you do not want to rely on the microwave, or drying is a priority. Confirm drying, loading capacity and care instructions in the exact manual; do not assume every electric unit has the same features.
Compare the three routes
| Question | Boiling | Microwave sterilizer | Electric sterilizer |
|---|---|---|---|
| What should I check first? | Health guidance and feeding-item compatibility | Sterilizer dimensions and microwave compatibility | Space and operating instructions |
| Where does the timing come from? | Health guidance appropriate for your baby | Sterilizer manual | Sterilizer manual |
| Drying | Thorough air-drying per CDC | Check the manual; the Avent here has no dryer | Confirm drying and its instructions |
| Which routine question matters? | Can you maintain your existing routine? | Is the microwave available when needed? | Do you need a separate unit? |
The carded buying example
The Philips Avent Microwave Steam Steriliser card shows ≈ 3,925 EGP. It works inside a microwave and has no built-in dryer. Check the card’s price date, and confirm dimensions and compatibility before paying.

Frequently asked questions
Should I buy a sterilizer or keep boiling?
If boiling fits your routine and the health guidance you follow, there is no need to buy an appliance just in case. If you want to change the routine, first check a microwave sterilizer's fit and compatibility with your microwave and bottles, then compare a standalone unit.
Is boiling time the same as a sterilizer's cycle time?
Do not treat them as interchangeable. The infant-care guidance section of this article explains the CDC and NHS difference on boiling. A steam unit's loading, cycle, cooling and drying instructions come from that device's manual.
Does the Avent model here include drying?
The Philips Avent Microwave Steam Steriliser card lists no built-in dryer. If drying is essential to you, confirm that feature and its instructions in any alternative model's manual before buying.
