Compare the main types

The whole decision comes back to one question: what do you actually drink every day. A drip machine brews filter or Americano-style coffee at one button and is the cheapest tier for repeated daily use, but it needs pre-ground coffee. An electric Turkish machine takes the stove-watching out of the routine and suits a household where Turkish is the style. A capsule machine gives you a consistent cup at one button with no grinding or tamping and the simplest cleanup, but the cost per cup stays fixed and adds up over time, and you are limited to the capsules on the market. A semi-automatic pump espresso machine gives you control over the beans, grind size, and dose, in exchange for learning to grind and tamp and cleaning the filter and lines regularly. An automatic bean-to-cup machine grinds and brews at a single button, so it is the most convenient and by far the priciest tier, and it suits a home that drinks a lot of coffee daily and wants every manual step removed.

What to watch out for before you buy

  • Buying a premium espresso or bean-to-cup machine when you actually drink simple drip coffee most of the time, so you pay for automation and control you will not use.
  • Forgetting that drip and semi-automatic espresso machines both need pre-ground coffee, then realising after purchase that you have to buy it ready-ground or add a separate grinder.
  • Choosing a machine with lots of mechanical parts, such as a pump, tubing, and a grinding unit, from a less common brand without asking about local spare parts and service.

Frequently asked questions

What is the first question to ask before buying?

What style of coffee you actually drink every day, not the one you dream of. If you drink filter or Americano-style coffee, a drip machine is enough. If Turkish is your style, an electric Turkish machine saves you the stove-watching. Only if you want cafe-style taste should you look at espresso or bean-to-cup, because the tier gap over drip is large.

Capsule or traditional espresso?

Capsule is easier by a wide margin: drop in the capsule, press a button, no grinding or tamping, and simpler cleanup, which makes sense if you drink a cup or two a day and want zero complexity. Traditional espresso means learning the grind and the tamp and cleaning the filter and lines regularly, in exchange for more control over taste and a lower cost per cup the more you drink.

Do I need a separate grinder?

If your machine is a drip or semi-automatic espresso model, it runs on ground coffee: either buy it ready-ground or add a separate grinder for more control over grind size at the cost of one extra step each time. If you choose bean-to-cup, grinding is built into the unit and you need nothing extra.
