Unplug the purifier and identify each part before cleaning. The housing, pre-filter and main filter can have different care instructions. Do not assume that a visible mesh layer is washable or that vacuuming every layer is harmless.
Read the manual before opening it
Find the model number and matching instructions, then identify which parts are removable for user maintenance. Work on a dry surface and follow the specified access steps. Avoid spraying liquid into vents or reaching into electrical components.
Core 200S: what can be cleaned?
The official Levoit Core 200S / LAP-C201S-AUSR manual covers the following cleaning tasks on pages 11–12. Check the label on your purifier before using these instructions.
| Part | Instructions in this manual |
|---|---|
| Outside housing | Use a soft dry cloth; if a damp cloth is needed, dry the housing immediately |
| Outer nylon pre-filter | Use a soft brush or vacuum hose every 2–4 weeks |
| Main and activated-carbon filter layers | Do not clean them; replace the cartridge when needed |
| Cartridge | Do not wash with water or other liquids |
During filter replacement, this manual allows you to vacuum dust from inside the unplugged unit. It says not to use abrasive or flammable cleaners. Follow its access steps; do not take apart the housing.
Put it back together correctly
Follow the manual’s assembly steps and keep the air inlet and outlet unobstructed. Reset the filter-check reminder only when the manual tells you to. Check the filter before dismissing the light. Its replacement guide is 6–8 months with adjustment for conditions; see when to replace the filter for the distinction between the reminder and filter condition.
Do you need a special brush?
A compatible soft brush or vacuum hose may already be available at home. The OXO electronics brush below is optional; it is not a manufacturer-required purifier accessory. Use any tool only where the appliance instructions permit, and do not brush the replacement-only filter layers.
If performance or unusual noise does not improve after permitted maintenance, stop improvising cleaning methods and follow the model’s troubleshooting guidance.
When to stop and call a technician
- A burning smell, or a strong plastic smell with visible smoke.
- Water or sprayed cleaner has reached the motor or the electrical parts inside the housing.
- The power cord is cut, frayed, or scorched.
Any of these means the air purifier should stay unplugged until a qualified technician has checked it. Recurring shutdowns, unusual noise or an unexplained smell are not automatically harmless maintenance issues. If the problem continues after the checks permitted in the manual, leave the unit off and contact the manufacturer or an authorized service center. A filter-check light alone calls for the manual’s inspection and reset procedure; it does not diagnose an electrical fault or prove that a new filter will solve every problem.
Plan for regular care
The Core 200S example has a brushable outer pre-filter and a cartridge that must not be washed. Another model may need different care. Check the manual and matching replacement filter before buying; our air-purifier buying guide covers those checks, and the US shortlist compares available options.

Frequently asked questions
Should every pre-filter be washed?
No. Check the exact manual. The cited Core 200S outer pre-filter is brushed or vacuumed, and its cartridge must not be washed.
Can I vacuum the main filter to extend its life?
Do not do so unless the exact manufacturer instructions permit it. The cited Levoit manual says not to clean the main and carbon filter layers.
How often should I clean it?
Use the model’s schedule. For the cited Core 200S outer pre-filter, the manual says every 2–4 weeks; that interval does not apply to every purifier.
Do I need the OXO brush?
No. It is an optional tool, not a required accessory. A suitable soft brush or vacuum hose you already own may meet the manual’s instructions.
