How Often to Replace a HEPA Filter in Your Air Purifier
Use your purifier’s manual and filter condition to decide when to replace it. The Levoit Core 200S example explains what its check light means.

Follow the replacement guidance for your exact purifier and cartridge. Filter life varies with the filter, hours of use and dust in the air. Read what the reminder light means in your manual. It does not measure filter condition directly.
A specific example: Levoit Core 200S (cited manual)
The official Core 200S / LAP-C201S-AUSR manual, pages 11–12, gives a 6–8 month replacement guide, with earlier or later replacement depending on use and pollution. The check light means inspect the filter. The light alone does not mean you must replace it immediately. Core 200S-P owners should check the manual and replacement filter for their own model label before applying this Core 200S example.
The manual lists reduced airflow, unusual odors, increased operating noise and a visibly clogged filter among reasons to consider replacement. A color change by itself is not a universal pass/fail test. Check and clean the outer pre-filter as instructed first. An airflow change does not always mean the whole cartridge needs replacing.
Cleaning is not the same as replacement
For this Levoit cartridge, the outer nylon pre-filter can be cleaned with a soft brush or vacuum hose. The main and activated-carbon filters are not to be cleaned, and the cartridge must not be washed. Do not transfer a washable-pre-filter instruction from another purifier to this one.
Keep a useful maintenance record
Note the installation date, matching filter part and the manual’s guidance. After dusty periods or unusually heavy use, inspect according to the instructions rather than inventing a shorter fixed schedule. When replacing, unplug the unit, follow the removal and installation steps, and reset the reminder only as instructed.
A heavily loaded filter can impair airflow and cleaning performance, but “it stops catching particles” is not a reliable universal description. If unusual noise or weak airflow persists after permitted maintenance, follow the troubleshooting instructions or contact the manufacturer.
Already own a purifier? You may only need its matching cartridge, not the new unit shown below. For the difference between housing care and filter care, read how to clean an air purifier.
If you need to replace the appliance itself, use the air-purifier buying guide to check room fit and filter supply. The US shortlist is the next step for comparing models.

Frequently asked questions
How often should I replace the filter?
Use the exact model’s manual. The cited Core 200S guide gives 6–8 months, adjustable for use and pollution; this is not a schedule for every purifier.
Does the check light mean replace immediately?
Not necessarily. In the cited Levoit manual it is a reminder to inspect, and replacement may not be needed solely because the light appears.
Can I wash the Core 200S filter?
No. The cited manual says not to use water or other liquids on it. Only the outer pre-filter is cleaned with a soft brush or vacuum hose; the main and carbon filters are not cleaned.
What signs should I consider?
For the cited model, unusual odors, reduced airflow, increased noise or visible clogging warrant attention. Interpret them alongside permitted maintenance and the manual, not color alone.
