Built-in Microwave for a Kitchen Cabinet: What Size Fits?
A guide to choosing a microwave for a kitchen cabinet cutout: countertop vs true built-in, ventilation clearance, and how to measure your niche.

Choosing a microwave for a kitchen cabinet starts with installation approval for the exact model, then measurements. Fitting inside a cutout, even one with an open front, does not make a countertop microwave suitable for built-in installation.
Countertop or approved built-in installation?
Whirlpool’s comparison says only select countertop models support built-in conversion with a compatible trim kit. That does not establish the same permission for the Toshiba, LG or Hisense models in our shortlist. Nor should you assume every built-in model vents only from the front.
What you need before preparing the cabinet
| Check | Required information |
|---|---|
| Model | Exact version and its manual |
| Installation | Manufacturer approval for the location and mounting method |
| Trim kit | Compatible kit number, if required |
| Ventilation | Gaps and airflow paths specified by the installation instructions |
| Fit | Cutout drawing, appliance dimensions and door-opening space |
An improvised gap does not replace installation approval. Get manufacturer confirmation or choose a model documented for the intended installation before altering the cabinet.
How to measure your niche before buying
- Measure the width, height, and depth of the niche opening in your cabinet.
- Check the manual for the model you’re considering to find the exact side, rear, and top clearance it needs.
- Confirm door swing clearance, since some doors need extra room to open fully without hitting neighboring cabinetry.
- Check where the power outlet sits inside or near the niche, since the cord should never run through a ventilation gap.
- Compare your measurements against the unit’s actual dimensions listed on the product page, not just an approximate figure.
Toshiba: functions do not establish installation suitability
The MW3-AG20PE has microwave, grill and combined modes, not convection. Toshiba’s model page supports the function description; we do not transfer Italian dimensions to the Saudi offer. We have not established that this offer supports a cabinet niche or a particular trim kit.

Frequently asked questions
Can any microwave go inside a kitchen cabinet?
No. An open front is not enough. The exact model manual or manufacturer must approve the proposed installation, including its ventilation and mounting requirements.
How much ventilation clearance is needed?
Use the requirements for the exact model and approved installation. Obtain them before building the cutout; there is no universal clearance for every microwave.
Do all built-in microwaves vent only from the front?
Do not assume one ventilation layout. Follow the approved installation drawing and any compatible trim-kit requirements for the exact appliance.
Is the Toshiba MW3-AG20PE suitable for a cabinet niche?
We have not established manufacturer approval for that installation for the selected Saudi offer. Its 20L capacity or external dimensions alone do not establish suitability.
