Refrigerator Stopped Working? A Troubleshooting Guide
Refrigerator suddenly stopped cooling? A troubleshooting checklist in order: power, thermostat, condenser coil, door seal, and when to call a licensed technician.

Start with safe external checks and the temperature of the food, not a guessed compressor fault. A refrigerator that has stopped completely needs a different first check from one whose light works but whose compartments are warm.
Protect chilled food first
Check with an appliance thermometer. FDA recommends 4°C or below in the fridge. If it cannot maintain that, protect perishable food in working refrigeration or suitable cold storage while arranging help. Keep doors closed as much as possible during an outage, and use time and temperature guidance rather than smell to assess food safety.
No light and no operation
Check whether there is a household power outage and whether the appliance is in its normal operating mode. Consult the manual before interpreting a display or control setting. Do not open a socket, touch a damaged cord or test other appliances in an outlet that is hot, wet or damaged. Repeated breaker trips need a qualified electrician or appliance technician, not repeated resets.
A failed interior light alone does not prove loss of power. Describe whether the display, fan or compressor also appears inactive when asking for service; do not remove covers to find out.
Light works, but cooling is weak
Read the temperature-control instructions. Some numbered dials work differently from a display showing degrees, so turning the number down is not a universal cooling fix. Check that food does not block vents, drawers sit correctly and the door closes fully.
GE’s troubleshooting guide lists several causes of inadequate cooling, including settings, airflow, door closure and installation conditions. Its model-specific settings and reset instructions should not be transferred to another brand. The summer cooling checks covers heat and ventilation checks in more detail.
| Symptom | Check without dismantling | What not to conclude |
|---|---|---|
| No apparent operation | Power outage and operating mode | That the compressor has failed |
| Warm fridge with working light | Temperature setting, door and accessible vents | That power to the light proves every component works |
| Cold freezer, warm fridge | Compartment settings and blocked accessible air paths | That a fan is necessarily the faulty part |
| New persistent sound | Manual’s normal-sound guidance and measured temperature | That sound identifies a specific replacement part |
Coil cleaning is not a universal repair
Read whether the model’s condenser is user-accessible and needs cleaning. GE NeverClean condensers illustrate why some designs need no routine cleaning under normal conditions. If the manual permits it, disconnect power safely and follow its tool and access instructions. Do not remove service covers or insert a brush near electrical or refrigerant components.
The flexible coil brush in the card is an accessory to consider only for a permitted task. Its presence here does not establish compatibility with your fridge or make dirt the diagnosis.
When to arrange service
If safe checks do not restore adequate cooling, arrange a technician’s assessment. Record the model number, temperatures, error codes and when the problem started. Long running alone is not proof of compressor damage: Whirlpool describes extended variable-speed operation as normal for relevant models.
When to stop and call a technician
Stop if you notice a burning smell, sparks, a hot plug, water near the socket, or repeated breaker trips. Unplug only if the plug and surrounding floor are dry and it is safe to do so. If they are wet, do not touch the plug; isolate the circuit at the electrical panel only if you can reach it without stepping through water. Keep the fridge off until a qualified technician checks it. Do not open electrical covers or the refrigerant circuit.
If replacement becomes the better option
Compare a written repair quote and its warranty with a suitable replacement. The Hisense 418L card is not evidence that it prevents these faults, and total capacity does not guarantee your family’s storage fit. Frequently asked questions
My fridge is completely dead, no interior light at all, what do I check first?
Check for a household outage and the appliance's operating mode. Do not touch damaged wiring, test a hot or wet outlet, or repeatedly reset a tripping breaker. Seek qualified help if the problem persists.
The interior light works but the fridge isn't cooling, what's the cause?
Check the control instructions, door closure and accessible airflow paths, then monitor temperature. A working light does not diagnose the cooling system. Protect perishable food while arranging help.
I hear a clicking or a strange buzzing sound from the fridge, is that dangerous?
Compare it with the normal sounds described in the manual. A new persistent sound with poor cooling needs assessment, but cannot identify a failed component. Stop for burning, sparks or abnormal plug heat.
The freezer works fine but the fridge compartment itself is warm, what should I check?
Check compartment settings and whether food blocks accessible air paths. If it remains warm, seek service rather than assuming the circulation fan is the cause.
When do I stop trying to fix it myself and call a refrigeration technician?
Stop for electrical warning signs or when the manual's safe checks do not restore cooling. Keep perishable food safely chilled and leave electrical covers and the refrigerant circuit to qualified service.
