How Long Do Refrigerators Last? Repair or Replace

There is no age at which every refrigerator needs replacing. Decide from the diagnosed fault, the condition of the appliance, the repair quote and the cost of a suitable replacement. Noise, a birthday or an inverter label cannot predict how many useful years remain.

What do published lifespan figures mean?

ENERGY STAR uses a 12-year product lifetime in a US savings illustration. That is not a failure-age study for the Hisense model in this article, nor a forecast for a particular UAE household. The evidence here does not establish a universal 10-to-20-year service life or that regular cleaning puts a fridge at the top of such a range.

Keep your purchase date and service history: they help establish warranty coverage and recurring costs. They are more useful in a repair discussion than treating an average as a deadline.

Signs that deserve a diagnosis

Poor cooling, new noise or recurring condensation warrants investigation. Settings, door closure, installation and component faults are possible explanations; these symptoms do not prove the whole fridge is worn out. A rising household electricity bill also does not isolate the fridge’s consumption.

Long running is not conclusive either. Whirlpool describes extended variable-speed operation as normal on relevant models. Record the temperature, when the symptom occurs and any error code before contacting service. If cooling is inadequate, protect perishable food in working refrigeration; FDA recommends a refrigerator temperature of 4°C or below.

Compare repair with replacement

Half the price of a new fridge can be your personal spending limit, but it is not an engineering rule. Nor does being under eight years old make a repair worthwhile automatically. Parts availability, repair coverage and the condition of the cabinet and seals matter to your decision.

For running costs, compare documented energy consumption on a consistent basis and the electricity rate that applies to your home. Do not import US dollar savings into a UAE bill or infer savings from age alone.

Care that suits the model

Keep the required ventilation spaces clear and clean the door seal as instructed.
