How Much Electricity Does a Humidifier Use? The Real Cost
Estimate humidifier electricity use from power rating and hours. See why steam needs heating energy, and compare exact models before calculating cost.

Estimate a humidifier’s electricity use from power and running time, not tank size. Its real consumption can change with the setting and automatic cycling, so the rating label is a starting point rather than an exact bill.
The calculation
Energy in kWh = average watts × hours ÷ 1000. Multiply that result by your tariff in dollars per kWh to get dollars, or cents per kWh to get cents. Fixed utility charges are separate.
For an illustrative 30-watt appliance running continuously for eight hours, the calculation is 30 × 8 ÷ 1000 = 0.24 kWh. At an illustrative rate of 20 cents per kWh, that is 4.8 cents. These are assumptions for the example, not a measured AquaOasis consumption figure or a current national tariff.
Check the exact model and setting
The Levoit OasisMist 1000S specification lists rated power of 27.5W. That is separate from its 10L tank and its low-mist maximum runtime claim. Do not transfer its wattage to the AquaOasis card or infer actual consumption from the tank size.
Steam humidifiers use energy to heat water; evaporative and ultrasonic designs work differently. Compare the particular models and operating hours rather than assigning every cool-mist unit one wattage range or promising a fixed seasonal saving.
| Input | Where to obtain it |
|---|---|
| Rated power | Exact model’s label or manual |
| Actual energy over a period | Suitable plug-in energy meter used within its instructions |
| Hours and settings | Your own operating routine |
| Unit electricity charge | Your current utility bill |
Measure if the estimate matters
A suitable energy meter can record consumption while the device cycles. Compare several normal days rather than treating a momentary watt reading as a monthly average. Keep the meter and electrical connections dry and follow both products’ instructions.
Automatic humidity control may change running time, so compare the same room conditions and target when judging two devices. Do not run a humidifier longer just to finish a tank: room humidity should determine whether more moisture is needed.
For the wider decision, see how to choose a humidifier, small-apartment fit and the US shortlist. Purchase prices and water or consumable costs are separate from electricity.

Frequently asked questions
How do I estimate daily energy use?
Multiply average watts by hours and divide by 1000 to get kWh. Rated power gives an estimate if the unit draws that power throughout; cycling can change actual use.
Is cool mist always cheaper?
Heated vapor needs energy for heating, but compare the exact models, settings and hours. Tank size or category alone cannot establish your bill.
How do I calculate cost?
Multiply kWh by your tariff in dollars per kWh for dollars, or cents per kWh for cents. Use your own bill and distinguish appliance consumption from fixed charges.
Does a larger tank use more electricity?
Not by itself. Check the power specification and actual operating pattern rather than inferring watts from liters.
