Clean a dishwasher by following its model’s filter, spray-arm and cleaning-cycle instructions. Food debris, grease and mineral deposits need different attention; adding a stronger household mixture is not a substitute for checking the parts the manual allows you to maintain.
Start with accessible food debris
Let the appliance cool and switch it off as directed before removing user-serviceable parts. Take out the filter only using the model’s instructions. Rinse it and use a suitable soft brush if permitted, then refit and lock it correctly before running a cycle.
Bosch’s maintenance guidance describes filter cleaning and checking spray-arm holes, but its removal steps and intervals do not automatically apply to another brand. Do not force a spray arm off or enlarge blocked holes with a metal needle.
Choose the right cleaning product
A dishwasher cleaner addresses residues; a descaler targets mineral buildup. Use a product and program permitted by the machine’s manual and follow the product dose. Do not substitute hand-washing dish soap or mix cleaners.
If your manufacturer permits vinegar, never mix it with bleach or chlorine products because mixing them can release toxic chlorine gas. A universal vinegar-plus-baking-soda routine is not appropriate advice for every machine. Check water-softener settings and salt requirements separately rather than treating all white marks as a reason for more detergent.
Wipe seals and inspect the setup
Wipe accessible door seals and edges with an approved cloth and cleaner. Check that dishes do not obstruct the detergent dispenser or spray arms. Poor loading can affect results even when the machine itself is clean.
When to stop and seek help
Persistent standing water, recurring odor or damaged seals after the prescribed care needs troubleshooting. Do not open pump covers or internal parts unless the exact manual designates the procedure for the user.
Stop for smoke, burning, repeated breaker trips or water near electrical connections. Do not touch a wet plug or reconnect it to test the machine. Isolate power only from a safe, dry position and get qualified assistance.
