Verdict: Start with the Shark Pet Cordless or Dyson V8 if you need one machine for floors and handheld jobs. Both can convert for above-floor use, so compare the actual tools, controls and charging setup. The Freestyle Max is a different, floor-focused cordless upright. The historical prices favor the Shark options here, but do not establish cleaning performance or today’s best deal.

For Shark versus Dyson, start with the actual machines: Shark Pet Cordless, Dyson V8 and Shark Freestyle Max. Both sticks can convert to handheld use. That means the V8 does not win a stairs-and-furniture comparison simply because it has attachments; check which tools each selected package includes.

Our dated cards record the Shark Pet Cordless Stick Vacuum at about $180 on August 8, 2026, the Dyson V8 Cordless Vacuum at about $390 on September 24, and the Shark Freestyle Max Cordless Upright Vacuum at about $150 on September 26. These are historical offer examples, not a current brand price ranking.

Two sticks with handheld reach

Shark’s Pet Cordless IX141 page describes a removable hand vacuum and crevice-tool use. The selected Amazon listing belongs to the IX141AMZ variant, so check the exact box contents rather than assuming a Pet Plus or PowerPro accessory set is included.

Dyson’s V8 family documentation describes Motorbar, handheld conversion and two cleaning modes. Its current family page also displays Absolute bundles with extra tools. A Fluffy head or powered furniture tool shown there is not automatically included with the standard V8 offer here.

For each offer, write down the jobs and tools:

JobWhat to confirm
Room floorsThe supplied head suits your floor or rug
Sofa and stairsA compatible upholstery or small powered tool is included if needed
Tight car gapsCrevice-tool access and a manageable handheld grip
StorageThe charging arrangement fits beside an outlet

The Motorbar’s detangling design is a stated V8 feature. It is not evidence that the selected V8 has greater suction, a longer useful runtime or better pickup than this Shark.

Runtime figures describe particular conditions

Shark’s IX141-family claim is up to 40 minutes in handheld standard mode without accessories. Dyson’s V8 maximum is also conditional on mode, floor and attachments. Neither is a promise of 40 minutes with a powered floorhead on carpet.

Decide whether a charging break is acceptable in your routine, and check the selected model’s instructions and controls. For a longer Dyson comparison, V8 versus V11 Animal explains why Eco maxima and automatic modes should be kept separate.

The Freestyle Max is a floor-focused option

Shark’s Freestyle Max SV2002 page specifies carpet and bare-floor brushroll settings and a charging stand. It is worth considering if you prefer an upright format for floor passes and already have a separate tool for furniture.

Do not pick it as a cheaper substitute for a handheld kit. Think about where its stand will stay and whether it is comfortable to push around your furniture. The manufacturer’s weight figure for one model does not justify calling either stick the lightest without matching the complete configurations.

Check the cost of keeping it useful

Find the replacement filter and battery for the exact model code, and confirm which parts you can clean yourself. A low item price loses its appeal if the machine lacks the tool you actually need. Equally, there is little reason to pay for an accessory set that will sit unused.

Choose the Pet Cordless if its selected tools and controls fit the work at an acceptable current price. Choose the V8 if Motorbar and its confirmed bundle make the better fit. Choose the Freestyle Max for a floor-focused cordless upright, not for a brand-level promise about reliability or cleaning power.

Frequently asked questions

Is Shark or Dyson better?

This page compares the named Pet Cordless, Freestyle Max and V8 options. It does not rank either whole brand. Start with the tasks and exact bundle: the two sticks can convert to handheld use, while the Freestyle Max is a floor-focused upright.

Is the V8 the only option for stairs and upholstery?

No. The Shark Pet Cordless also converts to a handheld. Check which crevice and upholstery tools are included in each selected offer. A family photo showing an optional accessory is not proof that your box contains it.

Does the Shark have less runtime than the V8?

We do not have a matched runtime test of these offers. Shark qualifies its IX141-family maximum by handheld standard-mode use without accessories; Dyson also qualifies the V8 maximum by mode, floor and tools. Neither headline establishes the winner with a powered head on your floor.

When should I consider the Freestyle Max?

Consider it when you want a cordless upright for floors and already have another way to clean furniture or a car. Its charging stand and floor-focused shape are the distinction. It is not a detachable handheld replacement for either stick.
