An unexpected kettle smell needs a check of the water, the kettle and its instructions. Do not assume a new-plastic odor is harmless or that every smell comes from limescale.

Check before adding a cleaner

If the plug, base and outlet are dry, unplug the kettle and let it cool. If any is wet, follow the breaker-off guidance below. Inspect the inside and lid for residue, and check whether the same odor is present in fresh unheated water from your usual source. This comparison can help you describe the problem, but it cannot certify that water or the appliance is safe.

For a new kettle, follow the manufacturer’s first-use rinse and boil instructions. Remove packaging only as directed. If an unexpected odor persists after the prescribed preparation, contact the manufacturer rather than repeating increasingly strong cleaning mixtures.

Remove scale with the model’s approved method

Mineral deposits and cleaning residues are different problems. If scale is visible, find the descaling instructions for the exact model and follow their product, dilution, temperature and contact-time requirements. Do not assume that a recipe approved for one brand also suits another.

For example, KitchenAid’s odor guidance gives a vinegar-and-water procedure for its electric kettles. That is evidence for those instructions, not permission to transfer their ratio or overnight contact time to every kettle listed here.

If your manual permits vinegar, never mix it with bleach or chlorine products because mixing them can release toxic chlorine gas; do not add another cleaner. Rinse as directed and complete any fresh-water cycles the manual specifies before making drinks. Do not increase concentration or boil a cleaning mixture unless the instructions tell you to.

Keep the electrical parts dry

Wipe the outside with an appropriate cloth while unplugged. Do not immerse the kettle, power base, cord or plug. Only remove and wash a filter if the manual says it is user-removable. Refit it correctly and let cleaned parts dry before reconnecting power.

Cleaning frequency depends on water and visible buildup. A calendar can remind you to inspect, but it cannot replace checking the kettle. Filtered water is not automatically low-mineral water; the result depends on the filter.

When to stop and get help

Stop using the kettle for a burning smell, damaged cord, leaking body, overheating, or a wet plug or power base. If the plug, base or outlet is wet, do not touch the plug; switch off that circuit’s breaker only if you can reach it without standing in water. Do not plug a wet electrical part back in to test it. Contact the manufacturer or a qualified technician.

Persistent unexplained odor after the approved cleaning routine also deserves support advice. It is not proof of harmless new materials, and repeatedly masking it with vinegar is not a repair.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use equal parts vinegar and water in every kettle?

No. Follow the exact model’s descaling instructions, including dilution, heating and rinsing. Never mix vinegar with bleach, chlorine products or other cleaners.

Is a new kettle smell always harmless?

No. Follow its first-use instructions and contact the manufacturer if an unexpected odor persists. Stop using it immediately for burning, leakage or damaged electrical parts.

How often should I descale?

Inspect for buildup and follow the manual. Water mineral content and use affect the interval, so one fixed schedule does not fit every kettle.
